Mammalian Toll-like receptors (TLRs) were first identified in 1997 based on their homology with Drosophila Toll, which mediates innate immunity in the fly. In recent years, the number of studies describing TLR expression and function in the nervous system has been increasing steadily and expanding beyond their traditional roles in infectious diseases to neurodegenerative disorders and injury. Interest in the field serves as the impetus for this volume in the Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology series entitled "Toll-like receptors: Roles in Infection and Neuropathology". The first five chapters highlight more traditional roles for TLRs in infectious diseases of the CNS. The second half of the volume discusses recently emerging roles for TLRs in non-infectious neurodegenerative diseases and the challenges faced in these models with identifying endogenous ligands. Several conceptual theories are introduced in various chapters that deal with the dual nature of TLR engagement and whether these signals favor neuroprotective versus neurodegenerative outcomes. This volume should be informative for both experts as well as newcomers to the field of TLRs in the nervous system based on its coverage of basic TLR biology as well as specialization to discuss specific diseases of the nervous system where TLR function has been implicated. A must read for researchers interested in the dual role of these receptors in neuroinfection and neurodegeneration.

In this new book Edwin Cooper surveys the field of comparative immunology; a field that has undergone great growth over the last twenty years. After an introduction to the immune response and its phylogeny, phagocytosis and primordial cell-mediated immunity are discussed, followed by a number of chapters that cover transplantation immunity. Humoral immunity is then discussed with chapters on invertebrates, antibody synthesis, and immunoglobulins. The book finishes with accounts of immunomodulation and diseases of the immune system. This book will be an invaluable guide and reference to immunologists and zoologists who are interested in the comparative aspects of the immune system.

Cells of the immune system communicate with each other, and respond to abnormal conditions by releasing soluble proteins, named cytokines. Abnormal or dangerous conditions include infection, trauma and injury, neurological disorders, and cancer. The balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines can comfort or exacerbate the symptoms in these diseases. This book focuses on counter-regulatory and the role of cytokines in different diseases. The goal is to understand contribution of cytokines in the progression of the disease as well as therapeutic potential of cytokines in the treatment of the disease by understanding cytokine counter-regulation.

Recent advances in immunology and molecular biology have resulted in new therapeutic approaches being generated and implemented in cancer clinics. The discovery of new antigens, mechanisms of antigen presentation, and interplay of cells involved in anti-tumor immunity have made the clinical control of some cancers more plausible than previously thought. An invaluable source for clinicians, researchers, and students, Tumor Immunology presents an introductory overview of the immunology of cancer including therapeutic approaches. Topics covered include the immune recognition of cancer-tumor antigens, humoral recognition of cancer, and the immunotherapy of cancer.

The 11th Hour Series of revision guides are designed for quick reference.

The organization of these books actively involves studetns in the learning process and reinforces concepts. At the end of each chapter there is a test including multiple choice questions, true/false questions and short answer questions, and every answer involves an explanation. Each book contains icons in the text indicating additional support on a dedicated web page.

Students having difficulties with their courses will find this an excellent way to raise their grades.

  • Clinical correlations or everyday applications include examples from the real world to help students understand key concepts more readily.
  • Dedicated web page, there 24 hours a day, will give extra help, tips, warnings of trouble spots, extra visuals and more.
  • A quick check on what background students will need to apply helps equip them to conquer a topic.
  • The most important information is highlighted and explained, showing the big picture and eliminating the guesswork.
  • After every topic and every chapter, lots of opportunity for drill is provided in every format, multiple choice, true/false, short answer, essay.
  • An easy trouble spot identifier demonstrates which areas need to be reinforced and where to find information on them.
  • Practice midterms and finals prep them for the real thing.

For this edition the text has been thoroughly revised and updated, but differs from previous editions in that it is confined almost entirely to oral diseases. The presentation of the subject has not however changed, and the book contains sufficient material and bibliographical references to stimulate the thoughtful undergraduate, as well as the postgraduate student. The major features of the book deal with the contribution of saliva and blood immune factors to the protection and development of dental caries, periodontal disease, oral, viral and fungal infections in addition to oral manifestations of autoimmunity and neoplastic diseases. New topics introduced in this edition include rapid advances in biotechnology, including monoclonal antibodies, synthetic peptides and recombinant DNA
