Why is public opinion growing skeptical of the scientific community after three decades of public awareness about HIV/AIDS? Consider answers to these puzzling questions. Learn from the decades of experience of two senior scholars: Dr. Omar Bagasra (an eminent molecular biologist, immunologist, and retrovirologist) and Dr. Donald Gene Pace (a highly published writer who examines public health policy). Explore intriguing new possibilities about human immunity, and the development of an effective AIDS vaccine. Read Immunology and the Quest for an HIV Vaccine. Benefit from an informed synthesis backed by a wealth of peer-reviewed scientific references. Review basic concepts of immunology, and stretch your perspective by contemplating this creative synthesis that provides a provocative treatise on the origin, evolution, and etiology of several forms of immune systems. Hailed both for its revelations and its intense readability, this extraordinary work of investigative reporting examines the myriad theories about the origin of AIDS -- and offers compelling evidence that an experimental polio vaccine administered in Africa in the 1950s led to one of the most devastating infectious diseases in human history.
-- The publication will coincide with World AIDS Awareness Day.
-- This is a landmark work -- the culmination of a decade of research, involving more than 600 interviews and analysis of more than 4,000 scientific texts.
-- Readers of Laurie Garrett's The Coming Plague, Gina Kolata's Flu, and Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On will be fascinated by The River.

The surprisingly hopeful story of how a straight, nonpromiscuous, everyday girl contracted HIV and how she manages to stay upbeat, inspired, and more positive about life than ever before

At nineteen years of age, Marvelyn Brown was lying in a stark white hospital bed at Tennessee Christian Medical Center, feeling hopeless. A former top track and basketball athlete, she was in the best shape of her life, but she was battling a sudden illness in the intensive care unit. Doctors had no idea what was going on. It never occurred to Brown that she might be HIV positive.

Having unprotected sex with her Prince Charming had set into swift motion a set of circumstances that not only landed her in the fight of her life, but also alienated her from her community. Rather than give up, however, Brown found a reason to fight and a reason to live.

The Naked Truth is an inspirational memoir that shares how an everyday teen refused to give up on herself, even as others would forsake her. More, it's a cautionary tale that every parent, guidance counselor, and young adult should read.

Surviving HIV/AIDS in the Inner City explores the survival strategies of poor, HIV-positive Puerto Rican women by asking four key questions: Given their limited resources, how did they manage an illness as serious as HIV/AIDS? Did they look for alternatives to conventional medical treatment? Did the challenges they faced deprive them of self-determination, or could they help themselves and each other? What can we learn from these resourceful women?

Based on her work with minority women living in Newark, New Jersey, Sabrina Marie Chase illuminates the hidden traps and land mines burdening our current health care system as a whole. For the women she studied, alliances with doctors, nurses, and social workers could literally mean the difference between life and death. By applying the theories of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu to the day-to-day experiences of HIV-positive Latinas, Chase explains why some struggled and even died while others flourished and thrived under difficult conditions. These gripping, true-life stories advocate for those living with chronic illness who depend on the health care "safety net." Through her exploration of life and death among Newark's resourceful women, Chase provides the groundwork for inciting positive change in the U.S. health care system.

Dr. Krakow's goal is to explain complex, often frightening and life-threatening, medical conditions, in simple, easy to understand language. In the case of HIV/AIDS, which has eased out of the headlines, it's tempting to think that the disease is somehow "cured". This is, unfortunately, not the case, although with new drug treatments, it's less likely that an HIV positive person will die of AIDS. There are still many serious side effects of being HIV positive. As Dr. Krakow writes:

"Despite the fact that HIV is no longer a death sentence in the United States and the developed world, this infection requires lifelong maintenance with multiple drugs that have many “side effects”. They are complex and difficult to treat in their own right and involve close monitoring. If not done so appropriately, you’ll die of them. In essence, chronic medical therapy for HIV has swapped the complex and varied deaths of advanced AIDS, the final stage of HIV infection, with the chronic illnesses resulting from these side effects; diabetes, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, kidney failure, and a multitude of adverse reactions."

Included as an appendix is the Wikipedia article on HIV, formatted for the Kindle by Ira Krakow. All the images and hyperlinks are preserved. The purpose is to give you a start for more detailed research on HIV and AIDS.

Dr. Krakow answers the following commonly asked questions about HIV and AIDS:

Why haven’t I heard much about these “side effects”?

Why is there no cure or vaccine?

What can I do to prevent HIV?

Who should get tested?

What if I’m HIV positive?

What’s this doctor going to do?

What are the long term consequences of the medications?

If I have a side effect I can’t tolerate, can I switch to another medication or lower the dose?

In spite of these side effects, it's possible to live with the diagnosis for a very long time. As Dr. Krakow concludes:

"Living with HIV is possible, but people should recognize that it isn’t easy. There are myriad long-term complications of ART that aren’t widely known. You’ll be visiting many physicians in a lifelong attempt to balance the benefits of keeping HIV in check in exchange for some serious, potentially lethal, chronic illnesses."

(Dr. Krakow is a former Family Practice physician. Currently, he is a medical writer. Dr. Krakow received his MD degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. He did his Family Practice residency at the Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania.)

HIV and AIDS in Africa: Beyond Epidemiology is a collection that seeks to further our understanding of AIDS by shifting the predominant understandings generated by biomedical and epidemiological research.

  • Brings together international contributors---including often overlooked African scholars and activists---from across the social sciences to examine HIV and AIDS from angles previously unexplored.
  • By presenting on-the-ground evidence and ethnographic cases, emphasizes that HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa is a complex and regionally specific phenomenon rooted in local economies, deepening poverty, migration, gender, war, global economies, and cultural politics.
  • Recognizes that AIDS in Africa cannot be stemmed until social, gender, and economic inequities are addressed in meaningful ways.
