Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is a rapidly expanding imaging method in cardiology which provides unparalleled diagnostic information about the heart. It is, however, a complex technique, and though the availability of scanners is increasing quickly, the expertise required to perform the scans is limited. While no book is a substitute for experience, this handbook provides an invaluable guide to performing and interpreting the scans which should aid both new and experienced operators.

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance is an indispensable guide to performing and interpreting CMR scans. What to look for, which sequences to include, how to acquire them, and how to interpret the images are all included in the handbook. The information is provided in a quick-reference, easy-to-use format with many images from real cases, and is designed to sit on the scanning console or in the office, providing a step-by-step guide to aid the CMR practitioner at every stage. All areas of cardiovascular imaging are covered, including tips and tricks for optimal imaging and how to avoid and spot artefacts. From patient safety to differential diagnoses of tricky images, to an easy to understand section on the science behind magnetic resonance, all aspects are covered in this concise yet comprehensive guide to this specialist area. Whether a novice or expert in the field, all readers should find this book a useful tool. It is an invaluable reference that no CMR department should be without.

The Second Edition of this highly acclaimed reference is almost three times the size of the original edition and is illustrated with over 900 color and black-and-white images. The Second Edition describes state-of-the-art imaging techniques and offers definitive guidance on the use of MRI in diagnosing knee disorders, planning arthroscopic surgery, and evaluating the knee postoperatively.Coverage of meniscal and ligament injuries has been greatly expanded, and the extensor mechanism is now examined thoroughly in a new separate chapter. Close attention is also given to interpretation of postoperative MRI findings after arthroscopic meniscectomy, meniscal repair, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The book also includes in-depth discussions on evaluation of muscle injuries and radiographically occult bone injuries detected by MRI.

Understanding NMR Spectroscopy

James Keeler Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK

This text discusses the high-resolution NMR of liquid samples and concentrates exclusively on spin-half nuclei (mainly 1H and 13C). It is aimed at people who are familiar with the use of routine NMR for structure determination and who wish to deepen their understanding of just exactly how NMR experiments work. It demonstrates that in NMR it is possible, quite literally on the back of an envelope, to make exact predictions of the outcome of quite sophisticated experiments. The experiments chosen are likely to be encountered in the routine NMR of small to medium-sized molecules, but are also applicable to the study of large biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids.

The book starts off at a gentle pace, working through some more-or-less familiar ideas, and then elaborating these as the book progresses. Each chapter ends with exercises which are designed to assist in the understanding of the ideas presented and to grasp the underlying ideas.

The applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to petroleum exploration and production have become more and more important in recent years. The development of the NMR logging technology and the NMR applications to core analysis and formation evaluation have been very rapid and extensive. The scope of this book covers a wide range of NMR related petrophysical measurements on cores including brief descriptions of recent applications of Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR and the basics of NMR imaging of cores. In the discussion of NMR logging applications various schemes of using NMR logs to obtain necessary information for formation evaluation are outlined, such as irreducible water saturation determination, hydrocarbon typing, oil viscosity estimation, and permeability prediction. The principles of these applications are discussed using schematic diagrams for illustration. A unique aspect of the book is that it provides a detailed account of the basic principles of spin diffusion and relaxation in porous media. Another important area that is covered is the inversion of NMR data into a distribution of amplitudes associated with relaxation time which provides the basic information needed to interpret the NMR measurements obtained from logging.

This volume, as does Volume 177, provides a general background of modern NMR techniques, with a specific focus on NMR techniques that pertain to proteins and enzymology, and a "snapshot" of the current state of the art in NMR experimental techniques. These books enable the reader to understand a given technique, to evaluate its strengths and limitations, to decide which is the best approach, and, finally, to design an experiment using the chosen technique to solve a problem.
