The notion of matching diet with an individual’s genetic makeup is transforming the way the public views nutrition as a means of managing health and preventing disease. To fulfill the promise of nutritional genomics, researchers are beginning to reconcile the diverse properties of dietary factors with our current knowledge of genome structure and gene function. What is emerging is a complex system of interactions that make the human genome exquisitely sensitive to our nutritional environment. Nutritional Genomics: The Impact of Dietary Regulation of Gene Function on Human Disease provides an integrated view of how genomic and epigenetic processes modulate the impact of dietary factors on health. Written as a resource for researchers, nutrition educators, and policy makers, this book contains the latest scientific findings on the mechanisms of action underlying diet-genome interactions. It presents a unique perspective on the fundamentals of nutritional genomics from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Contributing authors introduce the important areas of cell signaling and transduction, the intricate regulation of gene expression, and alteration of gene-linked chronic diseases, such as obesity-induced inflammation, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The authors detail significant areas of interest within nutritional genomics—including plant-based foods as epigenetic modifiers of gene function and the effects of bioactive phytochemicals on inherited genotype and expressed phenotypes. They also discuss the role of vitamin D in various cancer risks and the gastrointestinal tract as a defense system. Given the key role played by agriculture and the food industry to produce foods to meet personalized health needs, the book also addresses agricultural breeding efforts to enhance nutritional value and the use of technology to increase bioactive ingredients in the food supply. The final chapters discuss manufacturing practices and novel processing techniques for retention of nutrients and bioactive components, as well as the need for regulatory oversight and proper labeling to establish assurance of safety and benefit. An excellent resource for this exciting field, the book identifies future directions for research and opportunities for improving global health and wellness by preventing, delaying, or mitigating chronic diseases with diet.

This is a wide ranging and deeply learned examination of evolutionary developmental biology, and the foundations of life from the perspective of information theory. Hermeneutics was a method developed in the humanities to achieve understanding, in a given context, of texts, history, and artwork. In Readers of the Book of Life, the author shows that living beings are also hermeneutical interpreters of genetics texts saved in DNA; an interpretation based on the past experience of the cell (cell lineage, species), confronted with and incorporating present environmental clues. This approach stresses the history, not only of the digital record saved in the DNA, but also of the flesh - the cellular organization which has a direct time-continuity with the very origins of life. This book is aimed at reconciling two opposite approaches to life. The first strictly sticking to a belief that all phenomena observed in the realm of the living can be explained from laws of physics. The opposite stressing the importance of features characteristic for a given level of description. To bring both views into a common understanding, the first part gives a comparison of the two problem solving strategies. The second part surveys the development of 20th century biology, bringing to light branches that never became part of the research mainstream. The third section of the book reviews a large body of recent evidence that can be interpreted in favor of the hermeneutic arguments.

Anomalous epigenetic patterns touch many areas of study including biomedical, scientific, and industrial. With perspectives from international experts, this resource offers an all-inclusive overview of epigenetics, which bridge DNA information and function by regulating gene expression without modifying the DNA sequence itself. Epigenetics, in its most basic form, means heredity is not the sole determining factor in disease development. Rather, environmental and dietary factors can trigger a gene to behave in an unintended way, while the gene itself remains unchanged. Epigenetics in Biology and Medicinediscusses cell biology and epigenetics’ role in human, animal, and plant diseases, including distortions in DNA methylation. The text also covers histone modifications, and epigenomics, as well as dietary and environmental impacts on epigenetic changes. Addresses These Important Questions: How promising are HDACi drugs as anti-tumor agents? Will restoring normal levels of miRNAs change the course of devastating diseases? Is it possible to alter epigenetic mechanisms once they are triggered? Is it possible to correct the abnormalities in methylation patterns that impact auto-immunities? Represents a Landmark Publication in this Cutting-Edge Field Dr. Manel Esteller, the editor of the volume, is a leading expert in molecular genetics of endometrial carcinoma. Under his editorial guidance, this publication goes beyond heredity to explain the crucial role of epigenetics in plants and physical and psychological diseases. This text is applicable to a wide range of researchers, including those invested in the applications of cell biology, those involved in disease research and deciding genetic patterns, and those coalitions concerned with the impact of epigenetics and possible cures. As a result, it has the potential to launch the development of a new class of pharmaceuticals that could have the potential to drastically change the medical landscape in the near future.

Transcriptional gene silencing enables multi-cellular eukaryotes to achieve differential gene expression during differentiation. In plants and mammals, silent chromatin is associated with hypermethylation of DNA at CpG sites and methylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9-met). These covalent modifications attract specific chromatin binding factors and ensure faithful inheritance of gene expression patterns during DNA replication and mitosis, referred as epigenetic inheritance. Importantly, chromatin factors which act independent of DNA methylation in maintenance of heritable gene silencing are also known in Arabidopsis. The intricate relationship between DNA methylation, H3K9-met and chromatin binding factors is under intense scrutiny to understand epigenetic inheritance. This book reveals a complex inter-play between DNA and H3K9 methylation deciphered in Arabidopsis. In addition it also reveals how epigenetic silencing can be reversed without passage through S phase of cell cycle. This concludes that epigenetic plasticity enables cells to survive constantly changing environment during differentiation when chromatin is subject to dynamic regulation.

The structural and functional importance of the correct patterns of DNA methylation in all parts of a mammalian genome is, unfortunately, not well understood. The stability, inheritability, and developmental flexibility of these patterns all point to a major role that these patterns appear to play in determining structure and function of the genome. Up to the present time, studies on the repetitive sequences, which comprise more than 90 per cent of the DNA sequences in the human or other genomes, have been neglected.

While the cell nucleus was first identified in a plant, we know now far less about the plant nucleus than we know about its equivalent in animals or in fungi, because the field of nuclear biology has been predominantly driven by the non-plant model systems. More recently, however, plant biology has begun to catch up as research groups worldwide actively address the processes that define the plant nucleus. This volume is an up-to-date compilation of the multiple facets of this emerging discipline and presents the timely topic of functional organization of the cell nucleus entirely from the plant biologist’s perspective. In a time of soaring food, fibre and energy needs, the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of plant genetic organization – and its effect on plant growth and development - is essential.
