PAGE gel staining and troubleshooting
This protocol and troubleshooting guide gives some troubleshooting on silver staining of polyacrylamide gel. (Frank lab, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation)
1. Gray or brown precipitate appearing as smudges or swirling on gel surface. Bands may be faint or absent.
2. Dark uniform background, usually yellow.
3. Mottled background, usually brown or green, with poor sensitivity.

I think it is because the pretreatment did not was out completely. I had the same problem before. I increased the washing step in between pretreatment and silverstaining |
