Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD)

Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD)

Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a mRNA degradation mechanism that eliminates mRNA containing premature translation-termination codons (PTC) usually at 55bp upstream of the exon junction complex (EJC). The NMD process is tightly coupled with translation and is also linked to pre-mRNA splicing. It has also been postulated that the distance between a PTC and the poly-A tail is the main regulation factor for NMD. In this model the cytoplasmic poly(A)-binding protein 1 act as a NMD suppressor, in contrast to the activator role of EJC element.
